Zend Framework 2.0 branched

With the release of Zend Framework 1.10.2, Matthew Weier O’Phinney announced the kick-off of Zend Framework 2.0 development:

we have branched for development of Zend Framework 2.0 this afternoon. Currently, the branch is intended for development of low-level infrastructure, and we ask that developers have patience; we may be reverting changes frequently as we experiment with some new approaches. I would actually recommend not tracking the branch for a few weeks

The first items to be looked at are:

Stripping require_once calls
Updating the test suite:
- Removing the AllTests suites (no longer necessary)
- Usage of TestHelper.php as a PHPUnit bootstrap
Conversion to namespaces. This will be automated at first, but will then shift to manual changes
Testing of alternate plugin systems. (To make more explicit for performance and understandability)

Zend Framework 1.7.5

Zend Framework 1.7.5 as been released and there’s a security update in it.

The security announcement is:

The Zend Framework team has been notified of a potential Local File Inclusion (LFI) attack vector in Zend_View’s render() method. To address the issue, as of the 1.7.5 release the render() method no longer accepts paths that include parent directory traversal (e.g., “../” and “..\”) in the path argument. This introduces a regression in behavior which can be addressed by turning off the lfiProtectionOn flag. For more information, see:

It occurs to me that we haven’t publicised the Author Online forums recently!

If you need any support on Zend Framework in Action, then you should try posting on the Author Online forums that are hosted by Manning. I’m fairly active in there and try to help out. Also, other readers may be able to help you or have already discussed your issue.

Zend Framework Certification

Zend has recently created a certification for Zend Framework. This is a way to show that you know and can use Zend Framework and as a result the exam is fairly tough. It covers the entirety of the framework, so in order to pass, you need more than a passing acquaintance with it. Of course, I’m slightly biased as I helped to write it

Guillaume Rossolini emailed me to let me know that the French PHP community site Developpez.com has published a review of the MEAP version of Zend Framework in Action.

The review is obviously all in French which unfortunately, I’m not a speaker of. Turning to Google Translate, I thought I’d see what the gist of it is and they are quite positive!

They conclude:

En conclusion, Zend Framework in Action est un bon livre pour découvrir l’ensemble des composants du framework et leur utilisation avancée. Pour les débutants, c’est un excellent complément aux tutoriels disponibles sur internet, permettant d’approfondir leur connaissance du Zend Framework.

If you speak French then I highly recommend that you read the review and then stop by the rest of the site and see what they have to offer.

Status update

We’re currently hard at work on the final round of editing the manuscript. It’s amazing how many details the technical proof reader and our copy editor have found. The book is going to be so much better as a result. We need to go through each suggestion though and ensure that the meaning hasn’t changed and to implement the suggested technical changes.

Lots of chapters to go, but I think you’ll be impressed by the improvements from the last MEAP.
